The Glacial Hills Food Center is a shared-use certified commercial kitchen for food entrepreneurs who want to start or expand a food-based business. The food center provides a commercial licensed kitchen and an assortment of shared commercial equipment which allows for food preparation, packaging and distribution of finished products in a food safe environment. The Glacial Hills Food Center is the only kitchen incubator in northeast Kansas that supports food entrepreneurs in the production of fresh and preserved high value specialty foods such as barbeque sauce and salsa, pickles, jellies and jams, and canned fruits and vegetables; as well as artisan baking; candy making and other food products.
The food center can also be used by farmers and market gardeners for the processing and distribution of fresh fruits and vegetables and other foods where processing and preservation adds value to local foods. Food products can then be sold to local grocery stores, restaurants and institutions such as schools, hospitals and colleges. The food center is a key part of a Local Foods Initiative which can build a more locally based, self-reliant food economy - one in which food production, processing, distribution, and consumption will enhance the economic, environmental and social health of our region.
The facility is owned by Glacial Hills Resource Conservation & Development Inc., a nonprofit organization located in Wetmore, Ks. The Food Center is a key component of the Glacial Hills Resource Conservation and Development’s entrepreneurial business development program that supports local entrepreneurship.
The kitchen provides a commercial 6 burner gas range w/oven, gas convection oven, double door refrigerator and freezer, mixer, food processor, stainless steel worktables, wooden top bread table, pots, pans and small utensils, baking sheets, pressure canners, water bath canners, digital scale, dishwasher and a packaging machine. Everything you need to “COOK UP” success. A small grain mill is available to grind your own flour for $10 a day.
In addition to kitchen space, the Glacial Hills Food Center also provides storage for bulk supplies and packaging as well as areas in the cooler and freezer.
